Every last week of May, FAKI brings various international plays and shows to the city of Zagreb, and provides a month-long May performance residency, to provide a base for research, presentation and the promotion of different modes of contemporary theatre and performance art. The festival was founded in 1998, as a response to raising elitism and the commercialisation of the institutional culture (politically and artistically handicapping the independent, avant-garde, subversive and the experimental agency of theatre and performance artists). The foundation of the festival selection, while simultaneously detecting synapses between diverse artistic practices, are the avant-garde performance research, innovative agendas and authentic processes, as well as the political and personal consciousness of the author(s) and their work.
